"Fort Hood" isn't exactly an anti-war song. It's more of a song about my own guilt for living life without thinking of the war every moment. I was invited by the USO to visit Walter Reed Army Medical Center in 2006; I went over and gave CDs to wounded guys, most of them in their 20s, most missing limbs. It was tremendously moving. As we left the hospital, I was thinking that I wanted to never lose that feeling I felt, of incredible gratitude for everything in life.
Fort Hood is the base in Texas that's lost the most people in Iraq and Afghanistan.
This month's SoulMix is a bunch of instrumentals from film soundtracks and one ambient song from Brightback Morning Light. I usually listen to ambient stuff like this when I write and since this year is supposed to be dedicated to actually getting off my ass and getting back on my ass in front of my computer to write, I thought this mix would be a good reminder.
I'll admit it, I'm addicted to making mix CD's. I know that's nothing to brag about but whatever. Anyway, I decided to make a monthly sampler of 10 songs I've been giving heavy rotation. This month features a rather poppy mix with 2 songs each from Paolo Nutini and Vampire Weekend. Then again, there's also a song about a serial cannibal, a ditty about cocaine use, and a haunting tune from radiohead. Anyway, you can check out the mix on ITunes.
