"Gangster Squad", Take 2
"Gangster Squad" is the film that gained some mild infamy for featuring a scene of mobsters shooting up a movie theater and the trailer for it was supposed to be tagged in front of "The Dark Knight Rises". Obviously, that trailer was pulled and the studio reshot the ending to cut the offending scene. At the time, I thought that was going to far but, in retrospect, it was the right call. I doubt the locale of the hit was key (I'm assuming the car exploding is the new version) so why risk bringing up a memories of a horrific incident?
As for the new trailer, it's about 30 seconds too long (especially since it uses the same hit over and over again) and I'm still not loving Jay-Z in a trailer for a period piece, but I think the trailer is still far better from what they had before. They also wisely play up Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone more. I'm not sure this trailer will win over any new converts but I'm still in. Then again, I'm a guy who actually likes the much maligned "Mobsters" starring Christian Slater, Richard Grieco, Patrick Dempsey, and Costas Mandylor, so it's not like I have the most discerning taste when it comes to mob movies. (And, honestly, I'm expecting this film to be a lot closer to that film than something like L.A. Confidential.)
